03.05-06.2016: GIOVANNI SOLLIMA in PALERMO presents 'IL CARAVAGGIO RUBATO'

Texts and voice ATTILIO BOLZONI, photos by LETIZIA BATTAGLIA, direction by CECILIA LIGORIO and video by IGOR RENZETTI

On March 5th and 6th Giovanni Sollima will be composer, conductor and cello solo at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo with the worldwide premiere of "Il Caravaggio rubato", multimedia show inspired by the "Natività" by Caravaggio, painting stolen in 1969 from the Oratory of San Lorenzo and never recovered. Legend tells that the precious painting is still in the hands of the Mafia, as a sign of barbaric abuse of power in defiance of the City. The main theme will be the "evil as subtraction of good," in this case of a shared good since it is a work of art that belongs to a community and its precious and ancient culture.

The show will have different aspects and will be created by five people: there will be texts written and recited by Attilio Bolzoni, a journalist of "Repubblica", then a video by Igor Renzetti containing the most iconic photos of the famous photographer Letizia Battaglia, who testified during her entire life the history of the Mafia in Palermo. The music by Giovanni Sollima will be the protagonist, with an impressive Cantata for chorus and orchestra, based on a text that contains among other things a fragment of Gloria De Machaut ( "Et in terra pax), and the madrigal "Gesualdo di Venosa" that well fits the theme: "Beltà then that t'assenti". Coordinator of the evening will be the young director Cecilia Ligorio.

The show will be repeated at the Teatro Bellini in Catania on March 18th and March 19th.
