According to the gospels of Mark and Matthew the words in the title were those last pronounced by Christ on the crucifix ('My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?'). The composer himself explains that with this work he sought 'to recreate in music the atmosphere that welcomed a similar invocation, without any descriptive or naturalistic intent'. Premiered at the Ravenna Festival by the Percussionists of La Scala in Milan.
