This piece was composed to support Amnesty International in the trial of the African-American journalist Mumia Abu Jamal. He was sentenced with capital punishment and incarcerated for years in the Philadelphia jail in the 'death ward'. The piece, premiered in the United States, is rich in jazz and ethnic contaminations. Among many performances of John Africa, the most memorable execution took place at The Juilliard School in New York during the program Focus! 2001: 100 years of Italian Music since Verdi. The work was released on the CD La formula del fiore by the ensemble Sentieri Selvaggi.

Composed in: 1996
